Aunque la versión más conocida es quizás la de Madeleine Peyroux, quien compuso esta canción a la edad de 28 años fue el malogrado cantautor americano Elliot Smith. Seis años más tarde aparentemente se suicidó convirtiéndose en un cantante "de culto".

Alfie es el tema principal de la película de 1966 del mismo nombre dirigida por Lewis Gilbert y protagonizada por el magnífico actor inglés Michael Caine. La canción fue escrita por Hal David y musicada por el compositor Burt Bacharach. Por cierto, el saxofonista Sonny Rollins compuso la banda sonora de la película.
